After hosting four failed talk shows in a row, Lauer thought about giving up on the broadcasting business. One day he spotted a truck for a tree-trimming service with a help-wanted sign in the rear window. He called and left a message. Luckily, NBC called before the tree service did and Lauer ended up with an anchor position on WNBC, the NBC owned and operated station in New York.
